Council Mission
The World Shipping Council's goal is to provide a coordinated voice for the liner shipping industry in its work with policymakers and other industry groups with an interest in international transportation.
Council Members
Members of the World Shipping Council represent over 90 percent of the global liner vessel capacity and transport approximately 100 million TEU annually. They have invested hundreds of billions of dollars in ships, port terminals, trucking companies; warehouses and technology in order to ensure a wide variety of options continue to exist for safe, dependable and economical international cargo transportation.
Council Work
The Council and its member companies partner with governments and collaborate on actionable solutions for some of the world's most challenging transportation problems. Since 2001, much of the Council's activity has been devoted to the development of new programs that improve maritime security without impeding the free flow of commerce.
The Council and its member companies are also working to promote sound environmental stewardship, including support for new international standards for vessel air emissions; a new international convention on cargo liability; enhanced customs information; and, international technology standards for containers.
In recognition that a modern and efficient transportation infrastructure is critical to economic growth and well being, the Council routinely works with a broad range of stakeholders from the public and private sectors to advance policies and programs that will expand the transportation infrastructure capacity, thereby improving the efficiency and security of the global transportation network.
