In support of Members' efforts to promote sound environmental stewardship, the Council is working with legislators, appropriate government agencies and international organizations on several areas of interest.

  • Ship Design: A new requirement has come into effect that will protect vessels’ fuel tanks with a double hull. The improved ship design will protect against fuel spills.Read more >>  >>
  • Vessel Air Emissions: The liner shipping industry advocates the establishment and adoption of effective international regulations to mitigate the environmental impact of ships' engines air emissions. Read more about the progress of this initiative  >>
  • Ballast Water Management: The Council is working with a number of organizations on an effective solution for managing ballast water discharges from vessels so as to minimize the environmental risk they present as a pathway for invasive marine species. Learn more  >>
  • North Atlantic Right Whales: The Council is working with the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) on appropriate steps that ships can take to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale from ship-strikes. Read more  >>
  • Coral Reefs: The Council is working with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to amend current legislation to better protect and restore coral reefs off the coast of the U.S. Read more  >>
