WSC response to Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) Call for Evidence
The World Shipping Council (WSC) represents liner shipping companies that collectively operate more than 90% of global container ship capacity. WSC members call regularly at ports throughout the European Union and are directly affected by the maritime provisions of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). This response focuses on the maritime provisions of the AFIR review, specifically those relating to Onshore Power Supply (OPS) in TEN-T ports
OPS is a critical component of maritime decarbonisation and delivers co-benefits for port communities through reduced air pollutant emissions at berth. WSC members recognise this and are investing accordingly - both in retrofitting existing vessels for shore power compatibility and in planning new builds with OPS capability.
